GearUp 2023’s theme is: the last mile delivery challenge. ‘Last Mile Delivery’ refers to the complex and crucial task of efficiently and effectively delivering goods from a distribution centre or hub to the end consumer's location. It involves overcoming logistical, cost, time, and environmental obstacles to ensure timely and satisfactory deliveries, often being the most expensive and time-consuming part of the delivery process.
An estimated 4.2 billion parcels were delivered in the UK in 2022, with the delivery industry now worth approximately £13 billion. There are over 15,000 delivery and courier companies operating in the UK employing about 112,000 individuals. The industry is set for major growth in the coming years with considerable demand for innovative thinking to tackle major 'grand challenges'.
Solving the last mile delivery challenge requires innovative approaches, collaboration among stakeholders, and the use of technology to optimize the final leg of the supply chain.
