Public Health England (PHE) has been supporting the national UK COVID-19 testing response through their clinical microbiology laboratories. They are looking to recruit laboratory workers to take up a paid roles as members of Bank Staff with PHE.

PHE are looking to recruit a pool of individuals onto Bank Staff contracts from now until at least the end of March 2020. These individuals should be based in the vicinity of each of the PHE nine laboratory sites to ensure that they can maintain the demand for testing that is being made. The nine laboratory sites are: Birmingham; Bristol; Cambridge; Leeds; Manchester; Newcastle; Porton Down (near Salisbury); Southampton; and in Colindale (North West London).

They require individuals with basic laboratory experience, ideally microbiology or molecular biology, as well as scientists with broader skill sets, including experience of molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR and working at containment level 3.

PHE would like interested individuals to complete the online form by Friday 13th November, which can be accessed using the following link:

https://surveys.phe.org.uk/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=96KM88521

All applications will be reviewed by PHE, and they will arrange to interview by telephone those that meet the criteria required by the laboratories. They are looking for individuals who can be flexible in terms of days and hours of work and will support the students commitments to their studies to ensure that work does not compromise their education. The roles being undertaken in the laboratory will be flexible and it will be up to the laboratory how they use students skills to fill the gaps in testing. This may be anything from dealing with samples at reception through to the testing of samples for COVID-19.

A note from Student Opportunity:

During the current Covid-19 pandemic and exceptional circumstances for Public Health England, we are supporting PHE by signposting directly to a PHE recruitment initiative to support Covid-19 testing in clinical microbiology laboratories, rather than advertising the opportunities through our myAdvantage vacancy portal for Warwick students and graduates.

As we are signposting directly to the PHE webpages in these circumstances, we have not applied our usual vacancy advertising policy, which applies to vacancies we publish through myAdvantage. We are not responsible for the content of external webpages or the opportunities advertised on them.
